1.How to build a laptop?

How to choose laptop components

To custom your own laptop you should buy a quasi-system laptop, processor, RAM, network card, hard drive etc. In this section, I will show you how to choose the right components.

But before you buy the parts for your laptop, you should determine the primary use of the laptop. Most people build laptops to play high-end games. In this case you will need to build the laptop with high-end specifications, but this will be proportional to the final cost.

If you only need a portable laptop for browsing, email checking and word processing, there is no need to build a laptop, as a basic integrated laptop will meet your needs.

1. Quasi-system laptops

Parasystem laptops are semi-assembled personal computers with a laptop case, power supply, motherboard, camera, keyboard, cooling system, etc. The user can decide which components (CPU, memory, storage, etc.) to buy and install, depending on their needs and budget.

Quasi-system laptops are usually produced by original design manufacturers (ODM) such as Quanta, Compal, Wistron, Inventec, Pegatron, ECS, FIC, ARIMA, Mitac, Clevo, MSI and others. These ODM companies produce PCs for certain brands (OEM) such as Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Mac, etc. These products are then sold to users as OEM products.

The following are some examples of the relationship between ODM and brand (OEM).

• Quanta: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Shenzhou, Apple, Thunderbolt, etc.
• Compal: HP, Toshiba, Lenovo, Dell, etc.
• Wistron: Acer, Lenovo, Dell, HP, etc.
• Clevo: Hasee, Terran Force, Thunderobot, Sager, etc.
• MSI: MSI, HIPAA, RaBook, etc.

When choosing a suitable paramotor laptop, you need to pay attention to the following aspects: whether the CPU and graphics card are interchangeable, the maximum amount and capacity of memory supported, the number of hard drive interfaces, the type of hard drives supported, the screen interface, etc.

If the laptop has enough interfaces or hardware that can be replaced, you will have the opportunity to improve its performance again and will only need to spend money to replace some of the hardware. For machines with few interfaces or soldered hardware, you can only replace the whole machine.

2.CPU

The CPU is a semiconductor integrated circuit chip that is mainly used to interpret computer instructions and process data in computer software. It is one of the main devices of a computer.

When you are planning to buy a CPU, you should pay attention to the following aspects.

Brands: Intel and AMD make up the majority of the PC CPU market. For PCs, Intel's most common CPU families are Core, Pentium and Celeron (with decreasing performance in that order over the same generation); AMD's most common families are Ryzen, AMD FX, APU, Athlon and Sempron (again, with decreasing performance in that order).

Cores: Cores are separate processing units in a CPU, each of which reads and executes program instructions as if it were a separate processor. Current CPUs have at least two cores and it is recommended to use a CPU with more than 4. If you are using your PC for graphic design, video editing, image rendering etc., a CPU with more cores is better.

Clock frequency: The clock frequency is the frequency at which the processor's clock generator can generate pulses and is often used as an indicator of the processor's speed. If you are using your PC for 3D modelling, playing client-side games, etc., a CPU with a higher clock frequency is better.

Note: When purchasing a CPU, RAM, hard drive or graphics card, ensure that the interface is compatible with the prospective system laptop (motherboard).

3.RAM

Memory is the bridge between external memory and the CPU. All programs in the computer run in memory, so the performance of the memory has a great impact on the computer and determines whether it runs stably or not.

When you are planning to buy RAM, you should pay attention to the following aspects.

• Generation: There are four generations of RAM, DDR1, DDR2, DDR3 and the latest DDR4. Generally speaking, the higher the generation, the better the overall performance. The mainstream memory currently on the market is DDR4.

• RAM Frequency: In general, the higher the frequency, the better the performance of the RAM. But the CPU may have a limit on RAM frequency. If this is the case, you should choose the highest frequency RAM in the range.

4.Hard Drive

When you are planning to purchase a hard drive, you should be aware of the following.

• Storage media: There are two main types of local storage available for the laptop you are building: SSD or HDD. HDDs are very slow and are only suitable as a secondary backup drive to your primary storage device. SSDs, on the other hand, are very fast and reliable. It is recommended that they are used as the primary drive.
• Interfaces: Hard drives have many interfaces. Some HDDs and SSDs are sold in 2.5-inch SATA format. However, with SSDs, the SATA interface limits their speed, so many SSDs are sold in M.2 PCIe format. Click 2 SSD vs SATA SSD for more information.

5.Graphics Card

If you want to build a gaming laptop, a graphics card is an essential part. Sometimes, the graphics card is soldered to the motherboard or integrated into the CPU or chipset. In these cases, you cannot replace and upgrade the graphics card. When buying a parasympathetic laptop, you should check that the GPU is soldered. If it is soldered, you should check if there is an additional GPU slot into which you can insert another GPU.

When you are planning to buy a GPU you should look for the following.

• Graphics chips: There are two types of graphics chips: ATI (ATI was acquired by AMD) and NVIDIA. AMD graphics cards are better at rendering graphics, while NVIDIA graphics cards are better at smooth gaming.
• Brand: Common brands of graphics cards include ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Sapphire, Dylan, etc.
• Architecture: Refers to the technology used in the GPU. The newer the architecture, the better the GPU.
• Streaming processors: The number of stream processors directly affects graphics performance. The more stream processors there are in the same generation of graphics card, the better the graphics card will be able to draw and the faster it will be.
• Frequency: The higher the GPU frequency, the higher the performance, the more heat generated and the higher the power consumption. On the other hand, the lower the frequency, the weaker the performance and the less heat generated.
• VIDEO MEMORY: Large video memory is useful, but not that important. If the architecture is not good enough, then the GPU will be useless even if the memory is large.

Assembling the Laptop

1. Turn the casing over so that the bottom is facing upwards. Then, use a screwdriver to remove the CPU part of the bezel. Install the CPU by pulling the lever on the right side of the CPU slot up to a vertical position, then return the lever to its original position.
2. Install the memory and wireless card. You simply tilt them into alignment with the slot and gently push them in. If you have purchased a GPU, you can install the GPU in the same way. please you will need to connect the cables after you have installed the NIC.
3. Install the hard drive. I have written a post on how to install a second hard drive. You can read it for detailed steps. But before you install the hard drive, you should consider how to install the operating system, using Windows as an example. There are two options.

Assemble your computer, create a Windows installation media and use it to install Windows. in this case Windows is brand new and you should install all the required applications.

Clone the disk. This method is suitable for situations where you have a previous computer and you have a lot of applications and files you want; you do not want to reinstall or transfer them as this is time consuming. This method will help you to install Windows and transfer files at the same time.
